The morning sessions are with children aged up to 7 years and those in the afternoon for age 7 and above. They have proved to be very popular, with sessions regularly fully booked. Fire lighting kit in a basket - always interesting Fire lighting kit in a basket - always interesting to see which of the local materials work well for friction fire lighting. On Thasos, the plane tree (Platanus orientalis) worked nicely for the drill and hearth producing a good ember, a piece of olive for the bearing block, and an olive branch bow with a piece of raw hide for the string (it snapped - so tied it back together). See @waterandrock.nature for the video of creating an ember 😊

NB. No fires, just a BBQ at this time of year in Greece and many other countries in Europe!
OAK TREE I took an acorn and put it in a pot. I t OAK TREE

I took an acorn and put it in a pot.
I then covered it with earth, not a lot.
Great pleasure was mine watching it grow.
The first budding green came ever so slow.

I watered my plant twice a week
I knew I would transplant it down by the creek.
One day it would be a giant oak,
To shield me from the sun a sheltering cloak.

Lovers will carve their initials in the bark,
An arrow through a heart they will leave their mark.
It will shelter those caught in a fine summers rain,
Under its leafy bows joy will be again.

Creatures of the wilds will claim it for their own,
Squirrels will reside here in their own home.
Birds will build nests and raise their young,
They will sing melodies a chorus well sung.

Under it’s branches grass will grow,
Here and there a wild flower it’s head will show.
My oak tree for hundreds of years will live.
Perhaps the most important thing I had to give.

Hiking through the mountains around Kastro, Thasos Hiking through the mountains around Kastro, Thasos, Greece; pine forests, huge ancient plane trees, cool pools in the mountain streams and rivers, a mountain hideaway far away from pirates of the past.

Pondering again, about adventures in the mountains of Thasos, spending a few days in these wild remote places, exploring with a sense of curiosity, camping out under the stars, and bathing in the cold waters - curious?

Knives out - simply a beautiful place for whittlin Knives out - simply a beautiful place for whittling and woodcraft. Relaxed under the pergola, vines and fig trees providing shade, sipping my mug of coffee, and carving a spoon from a freshly cut olive branch.

I'm staying with friends in Kazaviti on the Isle of Thasos @waterandrock.nature they offer Nature and Art Residences, and I'm pondering, wouldn't this be a wonderful place to share my love of wood carving, I wonder, what do you think?

To escape for a while to a Greek island, where buying fresh fruit and vegetables from the local market followed by a swim in the sea is the normal. And yes today we bathed in this wonderfully cool pool in the gorge, and walked higher, searching for orchids, the fragrance of the flowers and herbs was wonderful, and following what is probably a Roman aquifer back down to the village, whilst listening to the birds 💚
