Scheduled courses and events are provided in the Chilterns, Buckinghamshire, and just a short drive from neighbouring home counties Hertfordshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire, or a train ride from London on the Metropolitan or Chiltern Line, the local station being Chalfont & Latimer.

Following on from rubbing sticks together in previ

Following on from rubbing sticks together in previous post and for those that are curious - these sticks are from the manketti tree in the Kalahari - gathered there whilst spending time with the San Bushmen, who still use these to make fire 💚 A little modification here, for attaching the drill tip to a straight stick of hazel. The dark stripes are from when drying / straightening the sticks over a fire - the bark was stripped and then wound around the stick, learnt by mirroring what a village elder was doing, a special time 💚

Simple pleasures, a little practice, and keeping it real. One of the fire lighting methods that is still used in tribal communities around the world - sadly less so, but forms part of skills that hunter gatherers needed to live their lives. It's not the easiest of skills master or even achieve an ember, from which to make fire, but there is, perhaps, a sense of connection to communities of the past for whom this was essential. But for now, I simply enjoy the simple satisfaction of making an ember by rubbing sticks together 💚

Simple pleasures - sitting in the woods by a campfire, the kettle simmering, awaiting friendly conversations, and a brew. Life in the woods is pretty good, it's peaceful, the sunshine poked through the clouds for a little while, a magpie is squawking, all is still, with just a gentle breeze. Wishing you a lovely day 💚

Woohoo summer is here - don't blink or you'll miss it. I've just been chatting on Three Counties Radio, talking about the lovely Chiltern Open Air Museum @chilternoam, and their Heritage Crafts weekend, it's this weekend, there'll be loads of crafting demonstrations, and yes I'll be there too carving spoons and giving a few away to kids that are curious. Get outside, it's lovely, leave work early and enjoy time outside, and maybe even visit us at the weekend. Wishing you a lovely weekend folks 💚

There's a south westerly breeze, bringing in some much need warmth, and for a moment I thought the sun was breaking through.
